Thanksgiving minus the turkey

It's Thanksgiving — for those of you reading this in the U.S. — and I’d like to share something with you.

It’s easy to lose sight of what major holidays such as this are all about. It’s all big business and so the real message can get lost. So, if we take away the turkey, the mashed potatoes, the pumpkin pie, the Pilgrims at Plymouth story, and the Black Friday sales, what are we left with?

I think that sometimes in life, especially at “down” times, it’s very important for us to remember the things that are going right for us — instead of focusing on what is going wrong. We all have stuff in our lives that we’d rather not even think about. I’m no exception. We have battles, we have setbacks, and we have disappointments.

But we also have a tendency to think too much about the things that are wrong and not enough about the ones that are right.

That’s where Thanksgiving comes in.

What if you stopped today to think about what you are grateful for? You may not realize that you have a lot more going for you than against you. I just need one verse to remind you of that:

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? Romans 8:31

In other words, we have God on our side. How can we lose?

One more thing:

Do you want to feel better starting right now? Do you want to change the focus in your life from the bad to the good? Come on, take a few minutes now and write down your Grateful List — 10 things you’re grateful for today. Write it down, don’t just think about it.

It will only take you a few minutes but it will really brighten your day. (Maybe while your fingers are on the keyboard, would you care to add your list here?)

Happy Thanksgiving!

(And go easy on the calories.)

Bp Renato,

Substantial & worthy! Love the verse!

"...tendency to think too much about things that are wrong & not enough about the ones that are right."

Yes, this rings true for many, many people... Don't know which is "worse": Thxgiving or Xmas for folks who habitually think in this manner (myself included).

However, yesterday was different for me. It was a good day!

Thank you for your solid post!

P.S. Of course, good humor! Too late though on going easy on the calories.

Bishop Renato,
This is so true! Many people only think about the food and the sale the next day. But when it comes down to it it's really about the day we should remember everything we are grateful for and thank God for them. I should also remember to remember all the good that God has given me instead remembering the troubles I'm going through. Thanks!

Hi Bishop Renato..I found so interesting the idea of writing: "10 things I'm grateful for.." I make it a day later, but here it's:

1) I thank God for choose me, let me know and serve Him.

2) I'm grateful for being part of the Sisterhood. It's much more than a blessing, more than a dream come true.

3) I'm grateful for the trip to Israel. God made it possible and in a such special and wonderful way.

4) I'm so blessed with all my friends that God gives me. The most important thing is that I can count always with them. They're true friends and choose me for who I'm and not for what I have. They can count with me too.

5) I'm grateful for serving God in the Kids Zone and also in the Pre-Sisterhood.

6) I'm grateful for the family I have. There's a reason why I'm part of that family.

7) I'm grateful for re-start talking with someone that I thought I lost. It was something really impossible and God made it possible.

8) I'm grateful for my friends around the world and for the Big Sisters. They help me, they take care of me, etc. They're so special for me.

9) I'm grateful with God for every thing He does for me, for every fight, struggle, blessing, etc.. because all these things makes me a happy and blessed young woman. And above all, they let me be close to Him!!

10) I'm grateful for the job God gives me. It's also a blessing in my life.

So true,Holidays have lost their meaning, for some they are just a day off, or time to go shopping, or a day to go out to eat with the family. I didnt even celebrate thanksgiving I went to church in the morning somebody hit my car (believe it or not) and I went back home and I slept all evening and all night. Forgeting to thank God for being alive, for being accepted, for being able to serve him, for having my 2010 car, for bing able to make it to the school of my dreams, for God changing me anddelivering me from all evil, healing my broken heart...I could go on and on.
So Bishop we definitely should stop focusing on the negative side, of course always wanting bigger and better things but we should remember to always thank God for the positive and big things that we seem to so easily forget about.

We always think of the good food we ate, the good things that people did for us but one thing that we dont usually think of the the good things God has done for us but instead we only think of the bad things. I thank God for the UCKG because it make us realize the important things that we neglect.
Thank you Bp

It's a bit late as thanks giving has passed but I wanted to write down my list.

I'm grateful for having the breath of life daily, for strength to do things with my physical body that some cannot. I'm grateful for having God in my life and having the opportunity of salvation and to honour Him with my life. I'm grateful for a blessed marriage, close family and caring friends. The list can go on as there is much that I'm grateful for. I will use this whenever negative or problems come my way. Very nice bishop.

A natural instinct of mine is sometimes to focus on the bad
Because though something bad may happen I need to naturally think of the good that will come out of the bad. Because a lot of times my day can go so great and one bad thing can happen and that's what always replays on my mind. But I will begin to see good out of every situation. I know God is with me so there is no bad news that can take me down and out. :)

Hi Bishop,

This is very true, its so easy to foget the things that we have going good for us and to dwell on what we don't have. We always remember the bad things people say about us or to us but so easily we forget the good words, yet if we only remembered the good things we would be so much happier.

I think I am one of the people who always forget that God is with me in times when things go wrong.
My ten things that I am grateful for (even though it's not thanksgiving anymore):
1. being alive
2. God giving me opportunities to better myself everyday
3. having God in my life
4. having a relationship with my mum
5. knowing that there is someone who loves me even after I do wrong things
6. my family
7. the VYG
8. having food to eat
9. the helpcenter and all the servants of God in it
10. my godson

you were right bishop! listing them down did brighten up my day because I realised how much more I am grateful for other than those ten :)
thank you
