What is sin?

Someone asked me recently, “Is it a sin to divorce my husband?” I sensed that her main concern was whether God would be angry with her if she did that. I think that’s the wrong way of understanding ‘sin’.

People often, mistakenly, associate sin with religion and God’s wrath and denying yourself some pleasure. But sin, put simply, is anything you do that hurts yourself, others, or God. In other words, to commit sin is to make a mistake.

In the Bible, the word ‘sin’ comes from the same root word in Hebrew that is used to express the verb ‘to miss the target’. If you think about that for a moment, it will completely change your concept of sin. You’ll understand that every time you sin, you’re missing a target.

So, in the above example, what if that lady rephrased her question and asked instead: “Will I miss the target if I divorce my husband?” Asking the question this way would immediately force her to ask herself, ‘What is my target? What am I trying to accomplish?” She’d then realize that the target in a marriage is not divorce. Rather, it’s to find happiness and purpose in sharing your life with someone else. So that lady’s target, in fact, was to solve her marriage problems and regain the happiness and purpose they had when they first got married.

But she mistakenly thought of divorce as a way out of her marriage problems. If she did that, she might have ‘solved’ one set of problems but immediately run into another one — being alone, disputes over the custody of her children, a financial mess, scarring the children for life, etc. In other words, she’d have missed the target BIG TIME.

Never again think of sin as a burden God has put upon you just to kill your joy and freedom. Remember that when you sin, or miss the target, you are the first victim. Yes, God may be sad you did it, others may also get hurt, but you’re the one who’ll pay the highest price. Nobody else.

Be smart. Hit your targets.

It's amazing how we always think that God want to stop us enjoying our life, I remember many things which I would have done, before, which were not good for me, but knowing what I know now and understanding that God actually is there looking after me. I came to enjoy those discipline and I found that in life they help me not to get into trouble.

I can really relate to this blog, because my second to oldest sister recently wanted to get a divorce from her husband and she has 3 kids. My mom prayed for her and she now decided to stay with her husband. She would have missed the target big time.

This is true Bishop when you sin you are the one that pays the Highest price. I believe no one has a target on hurting themselves this means it is not in God's plan to hurt us but we are the one who miss the target and end up Hurting ourselve, people around us and most of all disapointing God.

Many people out there thinks that going to church is so boring and if you give your life to Jesus you are forced to be a innocent person. Just the other day i heard that one of the youth went up to this girl and said, "Why did you get baptized? you should've never got baptized, now you have to be a good little girl." Often we dont understand that everything God does for us is because He really loves us.
Thank you for the post, it's an eye opener.

Seeing sin like this, identifies that even though we all make mistakes. It is important to always realise our sin is us missing the target. The target of where we are suppose to be going.

Bishop i have never thought of it in this way.It really opens my mind.I think for me to overcome the physical sin was easy.I was religious, brought up in a catholic enviroment so i was always fearful of commiting any mistakes, but the sin in our hearts(unforgiveness.grudges etc)cause the most damage because we live with guilt that can destroy us for the accuser uses any opportunity to seperate us from God.This is difficult but through God not impossible because daily is is transforming us into His image.

Hi Bishop,

I think if more people saw this way, fewer people will miss the target! this explanation makes you think before acting rashly and consequently makes you see that the right thing to do is to hit the target...with that realisation also comes an alternative course of action.

When we trust in God we put this before the decisions we make and are best able to make the right one for us as we relay it on the result rather than what we see before us.

It makes total sense bishop, I thought about it and tried to apply it to different issues like the one of smoking. People always ask "is it a sin to smoke?", rephrasing the question from what I just read I'll go like 'am I missing a target if I smoke?' The target is to keep the house of God(my boby) pure and smoking contaminates it...WOW!
